An ageing tarmac drive
Cracking, patched repairs and weeds along the edges. If the tarmac is still stable it can often be resurfaced; if it is breaking up, it comes out.
Severn Stone & Resin
We install resin-bound driveways for homes across Worcester and the villages around it — from older properties near the city to newer estates on the edge of town. Careful preparation, honest advice and a clear price before any work starts.

Natural aggregate is mixed with a clear resin and trowelled out over a prepared base to form one continuous surface. Every stone is coated, so nothing works loose underfoot or gets carried into the house.
Small gaps remain between the stones, which is what allows water to pass through rather than run off to the road. That matters on a lot of Worcester frontages, where drives sit close to the pavement and surface water has nowhere obvious to go.
The finish is smooth but not slippery, easy to sweep, and free of the joints and weeds you get with block paving. More about resin bound surfacing.
Plenty of drives around St John’s, Barbourne and Battenhall were laid decades ago for lighter, smaller vehicles. Resurfacing is a chance to sort the base and levels at the same time.
Older frontages often drain towards the house or straight onto the pavement. A permeable build-up, a channel drain or a border soakaway usually solves it.
Red brick, painted render and black-and-white detailing all sit differently against stone. Choosing an aggregate that matches the brickwork makes more difference than most people expect.
A joint-free surface means no weeds coming through and no sand washing out. A brush over now and then keeps it looking right.
Suitability always comes back to the existing surface and the site itself, so we look before we advise.

Stone in the lawn, on the path and in the hallway. The same aggregate look, bound so it stays where it was laid.

Standing water after heavy rain usually points to levels or a sealed surface. Drainage gets designed in rather than added afterwards.

Sunken paving and mismatched repairs pull a frontage down. A single clean surface with a defined edge lifts the whole house.
We measure up, check the existing surface and talk through what you want.
Excavation where needed, then a compacted sub-base and edging set to the right levels.
Falls, channels or a permeable build-up, decided by how water moves on your frontage.
The aggregate and resin are mixed on site and trowelled out to an even depth.
The surface is left to cure, edges are finished and the site is cleared.
No two drives price the same, and a figure given over the phone without seeing the surface is a guess.
Area is the starting point, but shape and awkward corners add labour.
Sound concrete may be resurfaced. A failed base has to come out.
Digging out and carting away spoil is a real cost on a full rebuild.
Channel drains, soakaways or a permeable build-up where water needs managing.
Existing kerbs may be reused; new edging is priced by the metre.
Narrow entries and terraced frontages mean barrowing rather than machinery.
Different stone blends carry different material costs.
Sunken sections, old foundations and tree roots take extra work.

Compare colours and finishesResin isn’t the right answer for every house. This is roughly how the three compare in practice.
| Resin bound | Block paving | Tarmac | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Smooth, joint-free stone finish | Patterned, traditional look | Plain, uniform black |
| Drainage | Water passes through the surface | Depends on jointing and falls | Sheds water to a fall |
| Weeds | None through the surface | Can appear in joints | Edges and cracks over time |
| Repairs | Patch repairs can show | Blocks lift and relay neatly | Patches are visible |
| Upkeep | Sweeping and the odd wash | Weeding, re-sanding | Occasional crack repair |
